Tribute piece to Hussam el Attar

Jad Atoui introduces a windmill into Cremisan Valley in Palestine. His piece, Newton Gaza, is a tribute to Hussam El Attar, a Gaza youth crafting electricity sources using wind power during the ongoing genocide. The installation aims to utilize a windmill to generate electricity, animating a string instrument. The instrument operates on the principle of a magnetic wheel, causing strings to vibrate when set in motion. The resulting sound is captured by pickup microphones and transmitted to transducers attached to a shallow water-filled pan, amplifying the vibrations within. This interplay of resonances, overtones, and reverberations creates an auditory experience, resonating through the water and imbuing it with vibrancy. Symbolizing vitality derived from natural sources, the installation serves as a reminder of life’s resilience in adversity, drawing inspiration from the enduring power of wind as a source of sustenance, resistance, and renewal.
